A giant, human-like creature is looking behind a wall behind which lies a city full of defenseless citizens. This unforgettable image kicks off Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), arguably one of the greatest television series of all time. It deserves a place among the best of the best because it uses amazing fictional world and energetic, rapid action to tackle complex ethical and philosophical issues. The world is vivid and full of little details, but not too complex. It isn't too detailed, but all major plot points are eventually explained throughout the story. Our protagonists, despite facing a world utterly unlike our own are easy to identify with, thanks to their clear personalities and dreams. As the story progresses and the stakes rise, we are presented with countless moral dilemmas and philosophical questions, that make you think about both world behind and our reality. Action sequences are simply brilliant in this series, the choreography is amazing, pacing is great and visuals are breathtaking (well, usually). The story is still a major part of the experience and it contains so many plot twists that it wouldn't feel comfortable to give examples on things I'm describing (how convenient...). All victories of the characters we follow feel earned through their actions and not plot convenience. It completely defies the typical anime conventions, so if you avoided anime before, it's worth giving it a shot.
